There is increasing support from governments and fishing communities across the Caribbean to establish marine protected areas. Awareness is spreading that MPAs (or fish sanctuaries) can – when managed effectively – generate economic benefits for local communities.
These tangible incentives encourage communities to play a greater role in fisheries management and get involved with the governance of their natural resources. Fish sanctuaries are not the only solution, but are part of a wider process to encourage local management of the environment. By taking charge of their future livelihoods and food supply, communities become empowered and better stewards of our planets ecosystems.
