MPAs provide a sanctuary for endangered species and have a higher biodiversity than fished areas. The high biodiversity improves the resilience of ecosystems, allowing them to recover faster after a set-back.

According to recent research in the Bahamas, corals inside an MPA recover faster after a mass bleaching event caused by global warming than those outside an MPA [14]. This ability of MPAs to increase the resilience of the environment is particularly important as the impacts of climate change are projected to accelerate in the coming decades.
