C-FISH Launch at Bluefields (Nov 2012) 008

The depletion of fisheries is often the root cause of rising unemployment, poverty and the vicious circle of social marginalisation and crime that afflicts many coastal communities in the Caribbean.

The tourism sector also suffers as a result of these downward social trends, as well as from the direct effects of dying reefs, eroding beaches and lack of local seafood.

The other victim of the crisis facing coral reefs and fisheries is of course the Caribbean’s unique biodiversity, with many species already endangered.
